

The Argentine Government is fighting a fierce battle against Grupo Clarín, owner of the main newspaper (Clarín), leading TV Channel 13 and CATV´s MSO serving more than half of the subscriber base. Ex President Néstor Kirchner, husband of incumbent President Cristina Fernández, who has been managing power in the shadows, has ordered to amend the Broadcasting Law which bans telcos from entering the IPTV market. Clarín has answered back with a journalist campaign against the Media Secretary promoting the measure, and is about to precipitate his fall or at least defeat him in the internal front where he derived his force from. However, doubts still linger over the end of this war, and IPTV openness as well

As sources of the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications in Chile have said, the analysis on the seven universities´ reports made for digital TV standard selection is complete. President Michelle Bachelet must ask for the final report and a decision should be announced in the next few days, although it has been put off several times. National Television Broadcasters´ Association Anatel is pressing for the adoption of ATSC. The Japanese embassy has won endorsement of the ISDB standard among politicians and technical people thanks to demos showing the best quality. The adoption of the DVB format, however, should not be underestimated due to the strong lobby of Spain.
